چکیده

This book represents many years of dedicated study by a respected pediatric surgeon with a passionate interest in conjoined twinning. Her extensive clinical experience and unparalleled familiarity with 20th century case reports led me to expect a superb treatise on clinical and anatomical aspects of this subject. It was disappointing to find the book to be centered primarily upon her controversial theory of embryogenesis. Embryological speculation occupies many pages that could have been devoted to topics relevant to the expertise of the author and the needs of her clinical colleagues. Many challenging technical and ethical problems involved in the management of conjoined patients are ignored, and most of the others are given only brief attention. Illustrations, an indispensable feature of any treatise on conjoined twinning, are relatively sparse and unhelpful, with virtually no illustrations of internal anatomy. Most of the figures are diagrams based upon her embryological speculations, or drawings and photos of external features. The surgeon, pathologist, or radiologist puzzling over the anatomical peculiarities of a case of conjoined twins will likely be disappointed by the relative paucity of detailed anatomical description and useful illustrations in this book.

Dicephalus dipus tetrabrachius conjoined twins of Zaria: case report and literature review.

One of the most interesting congenital malformations to manage is a conjoined twin. Conjoined twins are rare occurrences in obstetric/pediatric practice. More commonly known as Siamese twins, this phenomenon is shrouded in mystery and considered a curiosity by general public. Current technology is lending a helping hand in the early diagnosis of these conditions. Frequently, the twins are born ...

Thoracopagus conjoined twins diagnosed by sonography

Objective: Conjoined twins are identical twins with congenital anomaly and severe mortality. The more common types include the thoraco-omphalopagus, fused at chest, and thoracopagus type, fused from the upper thorax to lower belly, at the chest. Here we are reporting one case of thoracopagus conjoined twins diagnosed by sonography. A 23-year-old woman with gravida 1 admitted to our clinic was d...

A case of conjoined twins (thoraco-omphalopygopagus tribrachius tetrapus) in lamb

Sheep conjoined twins have been reported less than cow. An apparently female conjoined twin lambs was examined based on external and internal features. In radiology, two vertebral columns and two pairs of the ribs were seen. Only two heads and two necks were separated (thoraco-omphalopygopagus). There were three forelimbs (tribrachius), one of which grew on dorsal region as a notomelus.  Teat b...

Successful Surgical Separation of Thoraco-Omphalopagus Symmetrical Conjoined Twins in Iran: Two Case Reports

Conjoined twins are derived from the division of a single fertilized ovum; a phenomenon accompanied with multiple congenital anomalies. Such twins are identical, of the same sex, and more likely to be female. Most twins die during the embryonic period, and only 18% survive longer than 24 hours. There are complex anomalies in thoraco-omphalopagus twins that makes them unlikely to live long enoug...

A case of conjoined twins after a transfer of a multinuclear embryo

A pregnancy with conjoined twins was observed after transfer of a multinuclear embryo. As nuclear mechanisms have a role in cellular differentiation, association between multinucleation and fetal malformations is possible. Follow-up studies on children born after transfer of embryos with bi/multinuclear blastomeres are needed.
